GAS STATION GANDHI

Hmmm. What to make of this comment? It's from a prominent pol, whose name I have redacted for the moment:

XXXXXXX introduced a quote from Gandhi by saying, "He ran a gas station down in St. Louis."

The pol then went on to identify as Gandhi what he was--a great leader who transcended race in the quest for peace and justice--and accurately quoted him saying "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

So...this pol makes a joke about an Indian running a gas station, thereby demeaning Gandhi for no apparent reason, and in a weird way insulting immigrants who have come to this country for a better life.

Do you find the joke offensive?

Look at it this way. Say Pol X introduces a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr thusly:

"Martin Luther King--I think he ran a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Mississippi. No, he was a civil rights leader in the 20th Century, and he said..."

What would think of that pol? Would it depend on who they were? Would you just brush off the inappropriate (and unfunny) joke, or wonder if the speaker had issues?

The politician who made the gas station Gandhi crack has an unfortunate history of making remarks that can on their face be taken as racist. This person once adopted a sort of ebonics to mimic former San Franscisco Mayor Willie Brown. This person refers to Jews as "you people" and, at least on one occassion, called a Jew "a f****** Jew bastard." Sandwiched in between some fairly blue language, the word "Jew" comes off as a modifier of a string of insults.

And now comes the gas station Gandhi remark. Same pol, across the span of several years, displaying a history of making racist remarks. So who is it?

Trent Lott? Strom Thurmond?

Nope.

Hillary Clinton. I will not hold my breath waiting for Josh Marshall, or any lefty blogger, journalist, columnist or writer to pounce on this one. Because they won't.

But if a Republican had said what HRC said, the press and blogosphere-left would be calling for their head.

As much as I can’t stand the woman, everyone needs to stop being so easily offended. The remark was a poor attempt at humor and the apology was sufficient.

And besides, Dr. King’s KFC outlet was in Georgia. :)

As Gandhi said, “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. … Then Hillary Clinton mocks you and others like you for working hard while she insider-trades cattle futures and lives off U.S. taxpayers and ghostwriters.”

Back to the issue. Yes, if a comedian like Sarah Silverman made the gas station comment it would be perfectly appropriate humor…for her. She’s an equal opportunity “racist” offender.

She could get laughs at clubs talking about how she “wishes Strom Thurmond were president today because he would do something about all the rap music, while giving black interns their own Monica Lewinski role model” or whatever else her politically incorrect mind might produce. On a recent show Silverman accused “one of the black guys” in rap band of stealing her bag. They played along with the stereotype and it was funny.

But if Senator Hillary Clinton or Trent Lott said the same thing — even followed by “just kidding” — it would be a serious issue.

Comics offend for a living. But the words of politicians have have much greater consequences in society. “I was making a joke” is not an excuse for publicly reducing Gandhi (of all people) to a racial stereotype.

Imagine if even a non-politician commentator like Rush Limbaugh actually said something racially controversial like, “McNabb must be playing so well lately because he’s eating more watermelon…no seriously, he’s proved he’s a good QB…for a black guy…no, just kidding again.” That’s would be the true equivalent of Hillary Humor. It’s also similar to Bill Clinton’s style.

I’m telling you, we really need to educate white folks like these elitist Clintons if we’re ever going to solve our racial issues. That’s what Howard Dean will do for America, and that’s why I approved this message.

Take a look at this.

And more about the Miserable Failure project. Currently #7 on Google and climbing.

“The remark was a poor attempt at humor and the apology was sufficient.”

Mike, c’mon. I doubt that anyone was truly offended by what Hillary said.

The root of the “uproar” is fairness. Trent Lott and John Rocker both suffered irreparable damage to their careers for their remarks because of the firestorm created by the media and special interest groups.

Senator Lott’s remarks were extensively interpolated to paint him as a racist. He never demeaned an individual or group directly in his remarks. His attackers really had to stretch to make that connection.

Senator Clinton’s “joke” was a direct stereotype of a specific ethnic group and a demeaning slap at their most revered leader. She would like us to believe that her thinking is entirely pure and innocent while Senator Lott’s was dark and sinister at best.

The question is: “Where’s the firestorm by the media and ethnic groups burning Hillary in effigy and demanding immediate satisfaction?” It’s a matter of equal treatment.

“I’m telling you, we really need to educate white folks like these elitist Clintons if we’re ever going to solve our racial issues.”

Dr. Dean, please educate us white folks. We’re so grateful you’ve found the solution to all our problems! Without you, we’ll forever be stupid and ignorant.

This was, plain and simple, an ethnic joke, the kind for which a Republican politician, of any stature or none, anywhere in the country, would be instantly pilloried from coast to coast in mainstream media. There’s a double-double standard at work here: a Democrat says something for which she would feign (and I do mean feign) outrage if a Republican had said it; and, mainstream media gives a glance, then looks away, when a Democrat does what they would use a high-intensity spotlight to focus on a Republican for having done.

Can’t we “call for her head” just as a matter of principle?

Sarah Silverman got in a little hot water on Conan O’Brien for saying she could get off of jury duty by using the term “chinks.”
