The Big Stories

US is still looking into whether Russia gave Saddam intel on our troops movements shortly after the 2003 invasion:

The United States is still investigating Pentagon assertions that Russia gave intelligence on U.S. military movements to Iraq shortly after the 2003 invasion, despite Russia’s denial, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Wednesday.

“Of course we will continue to look into the matter,” Rice told a congressional hearing.

Rice told the House of Representatives International Relations Committee that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov passed her a letter stating that Russia did not believe the contacts took place.

“They have talked to the ambassador at the time,” Rice said.

They talked to the ambassador? That’s it? Hopefully the Bush admin isn’t satisfied with that.

Today’s ANSWER Woman

Meredith Viera, who is widely rumored to be Katie Couric’s replacement on the Today Show, is an anti-war protestor.

On the Monday, August 30, 2004 edition of the ABC daytime show she quad-hosts, The View, the former CBS 60 Minutes reporter told viewers that she attended the anti-Bush protest held in New York City on the Sunday before the Republican convention opened, insisting: “I didn’t go anti-Bush or pro-Kerry. I’m still so upset about this war and I’m so proud I live in a country where you can protest.” She showed a photo of herself marching with her pre-teen daughter and her husband, Richard, who was the senior political producer at CBS News for most of the 1980s. Behind her in the photo: A protest sign featuring a “W,” for George W. Bush, with a slash through it.

Earlier in 2004, she declared of the Iraq war: “Everything’s been built on lies. Everything! I mean the entire pre-text for war.” And, with war impending in March of 2003, Vieira argued that anti-war protests “should be consistent and repeated every day, I believe.”

That these rallies are usually organized by the violent Communists of International ANSWER—the same people who have organized the May Day Hispanic strike—never seems to bother people like Meredith Viera. Or the allegedly unbiased news networks that employ them.

“Culture” No Defense Against Sexual Assault Charges

Wow. Just, wow. A Pakistani residing in Australia actually tried to use his “culture” as an excuse for raping teenage girls. The court rejected that defense, of course.

But, wow.

Libby Says Bush Authorized Leak

I imagine that the Minute Man will be all over this story once he’s had the chance to peruse it. I’ll make one point about it. If the president authorized the “leak” of a doc to a reporter, it’s no longer a leak—it’s a release. The president has declassification authority. Therefore, if this story that says Scooter Libby told the grand jury that Bush authorized the 2002 NIE to be “leaked” to a reporter is true, well then, where’s the crime that drove the Fitzgerald investigation? What did Fitz know about this, and when did he know it? If Fitz knew early on that Bush authorized the leak, but continued his investigation, the relevant question it seems to me is “Why?” Prosecutors are supposed to investigate crimes, not create crimes by snaring people in he said-she said mindbends.

bp, i’d like to see some documentation on the legality of presidents outing undercover federal agents.

but even if you are correct, however, the questions remain: why then, did bush out her to the press when he did and why did he claim his office had not? i mean, what was the purpose?

Well, actually, Libby is saying—and I wrote—that Bush authorized the NIE’s release, not the name of Plame. Lots of libs have conflated the NIE with Plame, which is understandable to some extent but not if you’re going to make a federal case out of all of this.

who cares who the leaker is?? plame had it coming. bush can do whatever he wants, cuz he’s the prez. duh!!

Nada is precisely what the liberal GOP will be getting from me the next few years!The Gop seems to be trying to out liberal the Donkey the last 2 years. With this and the bigger govt they have put on Americans’s backs it seems the GOP is more liberal!

Thank you. Lets take the word ‘leak’ out of the story. Releasing a classified name was not wise however, legally done or not.

floydd and bp - Supposing we agree that there was nothing untoward or wrong or illegal with what Bush did. However, even with that in mind, it is still fair to say that this whole episode constitutes a “leak” of information. The term “leak” as it is commonly understood is the passing along of information in stealth to a public source before this information is presented publicly as part of the official record. Politicians and/or their staffers “leak” authorized non-classified, but not publicly available, materials all the time - both as a test of public reaction before formally going public or as a strategy for laying the groundwork for building either support or opposition to a pending policy initiative. If the information was “realeased,” why didn’t Bush or Cheney or Libby or McClellan just make a case using the NIE in a press conference or some other formal speech? Why didn’t they issue a press release with this information to all major media outlets, like I imagine they usually would do? Why the need for stealth and secrecy about how the information was communicated to selected media? That’s what makes it precisely a “leak,” regardless of whether the material was declassified and given the green light to “get it out” by Bush. It’s how the material got out that makes it a “leak.”

I think honest people, in their hearts and consciences, know this.

Jimmy;

I think the most likely explanation is the consistent and overall incompetence of the Bush administration on public relations. Given the endless series of screw ups and mishandled opportunities (the latest case), I hardly think it’s reaching to consider this just one more example.

jon;

Plame was outed by Richard Armitage, not Bush. Therefore your question makes no sense.
