Mom's lie kept doctors from killing the miracle baby

You've seen this story and this photo on Drudge:

Amillia Sonja Taylor is a miracle baby--21 weeks and 6 days after conception, and she went home healthy from the hospital today. Because she was conceived through in vitro fertilization, the exact date could be pinpointed. She is the youngest we know of that has survived.

I had some questions about this when I read the AP story aloud to Mrs. See-Dubya. Why, I asked, was the baby delivered by C-Section at a time the doctors knew she wasn't supposed to be viable? Perhaps, suggested the missus, there were complications with the birth canal and that was the only way out.

It's much more sinister than that. Here's an amazing catch by Penraker: Her mother lied about her age. She had to, or the doctors would have let her die.

Full story here.

The medical standard is not even to resuscitate a 22-week baby, so when Sonja Taylor knew she was going into labor in October after just 19 weeks, she lied about the baby's term.

Doctors worked to delay the birth, but nine days later, they had no choice but to perform an emergency C-section, thinking they were delivering a 23-week baby.

But remember, Amillia is just a lump of tissue. Just like you and me.

Wow. That’s incredible. Good for her for thinking quickly, shame on Doctors for being willing to let the kid die. :o(

This is truly an amazing story. The baby has an amazing will to survive. Part of me almost wants to believe that babies, even premature ones, know when they are wanted from their mothers. I could never prove that, but even adults are more willing to fight their way through tough spots in life when they know they are loved. Why not babies.…?
