Unbelievable, Laughable, Inexcusable

You know how every so often they find tunnels through which illegal aliens and drugs are smuggled over the Mexican border?

Congressman Tom Davis is looking into what happens to these things once they've been discovered. And nobody at the CBP (Customs & Border Patrol) can give a straight answer about what's happening to them. It's expensive to fill them in or "cap" them with concrete, they claim, and they're still negotiating with property owners.

I had assumed these things were routinely demolished as soon as they were found. Apparently not:

Some smugglers have used the concrete from capped tunnels to reinforce those tunnels and others, authorities said.
Well, gentlemen, dynamite is cheap. I recommend it.

And as for property owners, I am told there are these things called civil forfeiture actions in which property used for drug smuggling can be confiscated. If your house has a major narcotics pipeline to Mexico hidden in the basement, I would say the state has probably met its burden, wouldn't you?

Um, is someone even guarding these things now? Does anyone know that around CBP HQ? Might be a good idea to find that one out.

I agree dynamite is the answer.

Some CA politician has been trying to put a law on the books making it illegal to dig a tunnel under the border. As you so correctly pointed out, it’s already illegal—duh.
