Asharq Al-Awsat: Why do fundamentalists terrorists love the West so much?

London based Asharq Al-Awsat is fairly moderate in comparison to other Arabic newspapers, but even so it's surprising to see this in its English edition:

The one thing in common between Abu Qatada, who is currently in jail in Britain, Osama Nasr, who was kidnapped in Rome, and Omar Bakri, who fled London after the 7/7 attacks, is their preference for Western countries over their own native Muslim countries.

These individuals unquestionably enjoy the benefits that are afforded to them by the western governments that they hate. They want the financial aid, security, protection, legal justice and freedom of expression that these governments provide.

Doesn't that constitute extreme hypocrisy? Aren’t they deceiving their followers through the discrepancy between their words and actions?

All of those three are more than just fundamentalists; they're all suspected terrorists. Omar Bakri is a suspect in the 7/7 bombings (I believe he was the dude who fled the country hiding in a burqa.) Osama Nasr is also known as Abu Omar, who was kidnapped in Milan supposedly by the CIA and sent to his native Egypt, and about whom I've written here and here. Abu Omar's radicalism and terrorist ties are usually swept under the table in American press accounts of his abduction; it's strange to see it acknowledged in an Arabic paper.

It's always good to see this sort of criticism in an Arabic newspaper, and I especially liked this conclusion:

What causes further disapproval is when we see a number of writers condemning the actions of governments that seek to get rid of extremists by deporting them to their native Muslim countries. Instead of requesting that the incorrect security and legal situation in the region be rectified, they want the states that expelled these extremists to allow them to stay in these countries and tolerate the intellectual destruction that they have inflicted upon their societies.

That said, the rhetorical question they hang this article on is pretty naive. Why do these radical imams all want to live in the West? Easy. So they can destroy it.
