Australian Mosque: Moderates out, Radicals in

Geoff at Uncommon Misconceptions (who should really blog more) notes the alarming case of a major Australian mosque in which a putsch takeover by radical international students has given control to the Wahhabis:

Up to 150 university students from Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Egypt who follow the fundamentalist Wahabbism ideology were central to the overthrow at the weekend of the executive board of the Newcastle Muslim Association.
Deposed association president Yunus Kara yesterday accused the students of pushing for new leadership of the port city's mosque in order to advance their own extremist agenda and continue "brainwashing" local Muslims.
Notes Geoff, "Why are moderates so quiet? Maybe it's because they're barely hanging on." That, and they'll end up shunned and slandered if they disagree with a group for whom nothing is forbidden in pursuit of their ideology. Example one: Jamal Miftah.

As scary as this story is, however, it's nothing that isn't happening already in the United States.

MORE FROM AUSTRALIA: Lack of faith in Allah causes global warming?

Radical sheik Mohammed Omran told followers at his Brunswick mosque that out-of-control secular scientific values had caused environmental disaster.

"The fear of Allah is not there. So we have now a polluted earth, a polluted water, a wasteland," he told a meeting this year.

"What are the people now crying for? The prophet told you hundreds of years ago, 'Look after the water'."

Much more to that story, and none of it good--especially the plans for demographic warfare.

There are signs of resistance from some Australian moderates. Sheikh Al-Hilali is probably responsible for some of the movement on the issue; he’s the kind of outspoken radical imam that makes moderate muslims uncomfortable.
