Weekend Reading, For Those Not at CPAC
You could get caught up in Ann Coulter's pathetic plea for attention (what's she going to do at the next CPAC...bust out the N-word? ooooh, she's edgy) or print out a couple of really worthwhile things to read instead.
Say, an actually meaningful comment on the celebrity culture of therapy, by Christine Rosen.
Or a review of the newest Oprah-fied New Age bestseller, called "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne. Apparently the author thinks you can get whatever you want by aligning your thoughts with the "frequencies of the universe":
According to Byrne and the twenty-nine co-contributors whom she quotes extensively, everything in the Universe (which is always capitalized and usually synonymous for "God") vibrates on a particular frequency. When you think in harmony with the frequency of something, you attract it to you. If you think about wealth, you will receive wealth. If you think instead about your debt, you will receive more debt. You attract what you think about; your thoughts determine your destiny.
People are eating this stuff up. I realize that to certain materialistically-minded people my own odd beliefs about the Resurrection and such are probably equally weird. But Jesus never promised me a wish-fulfillment free lunch plan. (JYB Tailwag: WorldMagBlog)
Finally, check out this harrowing tale of the everyday problems in a cop's life, over at Flopping Aces: The Dark Side of the Badge.
