Camp Cropper Commandant Comes a Cropper

Via Penraker, I see that the commander of Camp Cropper, the out-of-control Baghdad detention camp which I wrote about here (and which was said to be becoming a terrorist training camp), has been arrested and is facing an Article 32 hearing.

What are the charges? It's quite a list, and there are very few details: An Army statement listed these charges against Steele:

"One specification of a violation of Article 104, aiding the enemy; one specification of a violation of Article 134, retaining classified material; two specifications of violations of Article 133, conduct unbecoming an officer, for relationships involving an interpreter and another Iraqi female; five specifications of a violation of Article 92, failure to obey lawful orders for wrongfully storing classified materials, improperly marking classified materials, failing to obey an order from a superior officer, possession of pornography and dereliction of duty as an approving official for the expenditure of government funds."
Penraker concludes he fell for "the old Mata Hari trick". But then why did he need the pornography?

Seriously, though--it was my impression that troops stationed in Iraq collect vast stockpiles of pornography, which I suppose is preferable to having them visiting local brothels. So is that all a violation of army regs?

And as for "aiding the enemy": ?

The military here is far too concerned with cultural sensitivity. I agree that there is a necessity to show some respect to our host country’s norms in public, but they basically want GIs to live like monks over here.

General Order #1 prohibits pr0n, booze, and fornication (with anyone, soldiers, contractors, local nationals or TCNs.)
