Spc. Lozano update
The latest on Spc. Mario Lozano's case is at John Byrne's blog, punditsmyass. Spc. Lozano has put together a good defense team, with two American and one Italian lawyer who is working out well. The Army is paying for the Italian lawyer. The trial has been postponed till May 14th, but Sgrena has attached a civil suit to the criminal trial.
Byrnes says the two Americans are giving him a break on the price, but they still need donations to cover the cost. If you want to help a US serviceman who is on trial for doing his job, and stick a thumb in Giuliana Sgrena's eye at the same time, paypal them a few bucks (info at the link).
I've spent a lot of time railing against the big law firms that send litigators down to Gitmo to help the terrorists pro bono, but don't raise a finger to help the troops. Well, lawyers Ed Hayes and Greg Kehoe of Greenberg Traurig are coming through with a break on the price, at least. So they have my gratitude.
On Greg Kehoe's resume was this item:
Chief U.S. Advisor, Iraqi prosecutions of Saddam Hussein and Saddam's associates. He participated in victim exhumations, document review and courthouse design. So there's a man who knows the score.
Unfortunately there is no rich Kuwaiti connection to fund an emergency "crisis PR" team for Spc. Lozano and rally public support behind him, like was done for the Gitmo terrorists by Shearman Sterling. Looks like he'll have to rely on word-of-mouth, and word-of-blog. Check in on punditsmyass when you get a chance, and post about this when you get a chance.
