You Didn't Know I Wrote For AP, Did You?
The ultimate See-Dub story just popped up on Drudge, about the indictment of 3 U.S. soldiers in Spain for their accidental killing of a Spanish journalist in Iraq.
Sgt. Shawn Gibson, Capt. Philip Wolford and Lt. Col. Philip DeCamp were charged with homicide in the death of Jose Couso and "a crime against the international community." This is defined under Spanish law as an indiscriminate or excessive attack against civilians during war.The story also mentions Spc. Mario Lozano, whose absentee trial in Italy has been postponed until May. And I saw that and thought, wow, what a great opportunity for some major law firms to get involved, just like they did on behalf of the terrorists detained in Guantanamo!
But as soon as I got that hobby horse back under control, I heard another whinny:
Also in Italy, prosecutors in February indicted 26 Americans, all but one believed to be CIA agents, accused of kidnapping a Muslim cleric in Milan in 2003.That is of course my ol' bud Abu Omar. And this AP story has improved noticeably in its description of why he was kidnapped. Usually news stories elide that altogether. Abu Omar is a rendition issue, and that's how the stories spin.Osama Hassan Mustafa Nasr, suspected of recruiting fighters for radical Islamic causes, was flown to Egypt as part of the CIA's extraordinary rendition program, and he was held in a prison where he has said he was tortured.
Even here the AP doesn't tell you he was abducted on the eve of the Iraq war, recruiting terrorists to fight Americans in Iraq. Almost like there was some pre-war connection there between Al-Qaeda and Iraq. No, wait, that's absurd, isn't it?
