Common Sense on Iraq in the NYT?!?!?
Guest contributors, of course, not the editorial board. West and West, a father and son team whom I have mentioned in this post, point out a huge technological and policy flaws in our attempts to handle the insurgency. What's more, we're unable to look at the people we interview like a cop in Chicago can--that is, there is no biometric database and a reliable device to access it that would tell us who suspects really are.
But what's more, when we do capture and identify the bad guys, we're not even succeeding in taking them permanently out of the fight. Iraqi prisons are simply too crowded, emphasis mine:
The scale of imprisonment must be doubled or tripled if we are serious about prevailing. There is no deterrence in Iraq today because most captured insurgents are released. We will never defeat an insurgency we allow to regenerate. If that bolded part is accurate, it's no wonder we're losing.
