From the Frying Imam's indictment: Networking
I've read the indictment of the JFK bombers (pdf here) and it really looks like there were two groups involved. The first was a Guyanan group run by a shady businessman identified as "Individual E" whose philanthropic adventures include deferring the expenses of jihadists.
The second was Trinidad-based, possibly affiliated with Jamaat-al-Muslimeen (who I'll admit I hadn't heard of before but they sound like bad news and arranged some kind of attack on the Trinidadian parliament a long time ago, I think) and this cell is where three of the suspects besides Russell Defreitas came from.
"Individual E" met with the FBI's confidential informant in Guyana, along with "Individual A", and told them how to build the network. Here's what he allegedly said:
Individual E suggested that Individual A [Defreitas] should get involved in teaching Islam, so that he could select serious individuals who were right for jihad. Individual E told Individual A that he had to be careful about who he approached about jihad, and mentioned the case of Sheikh Abdel Rahman and his attorney (Lynne Stewart).
Guess what, Individual E: Lynne Stewart didn't give up nobody. She was loyal to the end.
Interesting also that the confidential source is a drug defendant--and Islamic. (I remember Karol saying the Duka brothers--the Fort Dix Six---were dealers as well when she knew them.) In fact I wonder whether he is from Guyana himself, given the ease with which he was able to travel there and be accepted by these guys. In any case, the FBI sure got their money's worth with "Source". Tapes, surveillance, travel to Guyana--he's earned his pardon. He took some big risks.
NOTE: This entry was written in comparative haste; I might want to reread tweak it a little this evening.
