The Perfectly Reasonable Military Maneuvers of Our Asian Friends

Nice picture from the British Defence Ministry, showing a new Typhoon F-2 shadowing one of 20 Russian Bear-H strategic bombers sent on long-range missions last Friday.
Two Royal Air Force jets shadowed a Russian military plane that approached British air space, Britain's Ministry of Defense said Tuesday.

The incident occurred Friday, the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin placed strategic bombers back on long-range patrol for the first time since the Soviet breakup.

Britain's defense ministry issued two photographs on its Web site showing one of the two RAF Typhoon F2s flying near the Russian Bear-H military aircraft over the North Atlantic Ocean.

The story last Friday of Putin's resumption of long-range strategic bomber patrols triggered my weekend salvo of 3 Cold War posts. Today, though, I'm going to remain in a state of Zen-like calm. Nothing can upset me, not even the Chinese report of the results of Hu and Putin's latest summit:
Hu and Putin agreed to further implement the Sino-Russian strategic security negotiation, to strengthen cooperation in the cracking down on the "three evil forces" of terrorism, separatism and extremism, and to join forces to tackle other major security issues, in a bid to protect the strategic interests of both countries, the foreign minister said.

Hu also held in-depth exchange of views with President Putin on major international and regional issues such as the development of the SCO [Shanghai Cooperation Organization], how to bring the UN into better play, and have reached a broad consensus, Yang said.

See, I'm just going to sit here and not wonder about what "other major security issues" might mean, or what "bringing the UN into better play" entails. And not even the photos from the latest multinational (only SCO nations invited) anti-terror exercises can get me upset.

I'm not upset because I know it takes a lot of tanks to defeat terrorists - those tanks will be very useful in stopping the terrorists' armored divisions. It's particularly important to have the military from different countries ready to stop a terrorist attack in a coordinated multinational effort, because Russia and China frequently ask for foreign military to deploy on their soil.

See? Zen-like calm. I'll bet I could even handle a Pelosi-Reid press conference right now.

How hard could it be for that Typhoon to shoot that 1950’s prop-job down?

Almost amazing as our still-in-service B-52s is the fact that the Russkies are still using the turbo-prop Backfire Bombers..

..aptly named, by the way.

Yeah, but this isn’t an attack, it’s a statement. And that’s not just a prop-job, it’s a nuclear-armed prop job.

Backfires (TU-22Ms)are supersonic bombers with variable swept wings, Bears (TU-95s) are the sub-sonic prop jobs.

Of course, you’ve fallen into one of the classic media faults - those aren’t tanks, they’re IFVs (Infantry Fighting Vehicles). BMPs of some sort, if I remember my recognition lessons correctly.

Mech Infantry, natch, has a substantial anti-terror role (as much as any full-up military unit). Which tends to detract from the snark. :)

Hey, I’m an ex-Air Force guy. It’s got treads, don’t it? [Thanks for the correction]

Here are my thoughts on the exercises - please contest them if you find fault:

Basically there are 3 scenarios where an assault on a fixed terrorist location might be required:

1) terrorists occupy a structure with hostages = urban environment, with little need for open field exercises like those shown in the linked pictures.

2) terrorists occupy a small town = rural/village environment, where open field exercises are useful, but is this a likely scenario for Russia or China?

3) invasion of terrorist-supporting state = rural/village environment, where open field exercises are absolutely critical, but Russia and China have strongly criticized the doctrine of suppressing terrorist-supporting states (at least when the US has done it).

It seems to me that the exercises are for one purpose only - to convince the West that SCO is not to be trifled with.
