Sand Kicked in US's Face at International Math Competition
Kind of a "dog-bites-man" story, but actually, we did take 5th:
Russia's national team became first among 94 participants of the International Mathematics Olympiad, which finished in Vietnam, RIA Novosti reported. How did we do even that well? Well, let's just say Thank God for Asian-Americans. Good going, guys - way to reinforce those ethnic stereotypes. All six members of Russian team won gold.
...
The second place in the overall standings was taken by young mathematicians of China, who gained five golden and one silver medals, their score being 181. The third place was shared by Vietnam and the republic of Korea, who got three golden medals each, followed by the USA (two golden medals).
But seriously, these kids are flipping impressive. Of the 4 seniors on the team, 2 are going to Harvard, 1 to MIT, and 1 to CalTech. These, rather than our teen pop divas, actors, and athletes, should be our teen superstars.
