The Russians Drag Us Back Into the Cold War (UPDATED)
[UPDATE: The US states that the incident never happened, and that the Russian bombers were never within 300 miles of Guam, though US planes were scrambled to prepare for intercept. Looks like the Russian's aren't quite walking the Cold War walk, though they certainly remember the talk. H/T: Mudville Gazette via Hot Air]
I've been calling it a Cold War for awhile, but it didn't have that Cold War feel without the old Soviet probing and prodding. Not to worry - the Russians haven't lost a step:
Russia's strategic bombers have resumed Cold War-style long-haul missions to areas patrolled by NATO and the United States, top generals said on Thursday. What he really means is that It wasn't unusual in the middle of the Cold War, and that we should accept that Cold War conditions have returned.A Russian bomber flew over a U.S. naval base on the Pacific island of Guam on Wednesday and "exchanged smiles" with U.S. pilots who had scrambled to track it, said Major-General Pavel Androsov, head of long-range aviation in the Russian air force.
...
The bombers give Russia the capability of launching a devastating nuclear strike even if the nuclear arsenals on its own territory are wiped out.During the Cold War, they played elaborate airborne games of cat-and-mouse with Western air forces.
Lieutenant-General Igor Khvorov, air forces chief of staff, said the West would have to come to terms with Russia asserting its geopolitical presence. "But I don't see anything unusual, this is business as usual," he said.
Last month the Russians pulled pretty much the same thing with the Brits:
While the Kremlin hesitated before responding to Britain’s expulsion of four diplomats, the Russian military engaged in some old-fashioned sabre-rattling.Two Tu95 “Bear” bombers were dispatched from their base on the Kola Peninsula in the Arctic Circle and headed towards British airspace.
...
Two Tornado fighters, part of the RAF’s Quick Reaction Alert, took off from RAF Leeming, in Yorkshire, to confront the Russian aircraft, after they were shadowed by two F16s from the Royal Norwegian Air Force, The Times has learnt.“The Russians turned back before they reached British airspace,” an RAF spokesman said.
Brings back old memories, doesn't it?
