Mexican Trucks Rolling Up Our Highways Today
Drudge, often a shrewder judge of what people really worry about than the MSM (who are busy telling people what they think they ought to be worried about), runs this item at the top of his page. The DoT reassures us:
Under the pilot program, Mexican long haul trucking companies that have met safety, licensing, and other U.S. requirements will be allowed to operate their rigs throughout the country. Proponents say this will reduce costs and speed up shipments. There are a lot of questions that ought to be asked about these inspections, that haven't been asked by our useless public advocates in the media. Maybe there's something to be found in the Teamsters' unsuccessful court case discussed at the link.
Failing that, I'll refer you back to this item of mine from May, in which (own-horn-tooting) I report an original source that suggests law enforcement has some concerns about the level of inspection these trucks are going through:
California law enforcement officers will soon encounter Mexican trucks and commercial drivers throughout the state. Some of these trucks may not have been completely and thoroughly inspected at the USMexican border due to current in-place procedures. Law enforcement should be aware of this program and know what to expect when inspecting a Mexican truck and interviewing a Mexican commercial driver. That's my main concern about this--how much inspection are these trucks subject to? But aside from that, I don't think this going to sit well with a large chunk of Americans.
Maybe there's nothing to worry about. Maybe it will be a boon to commerce and improve the efficiency of our trade and I should just shut up. I certainly feel more ambivalent about this than I do, say, a failure to enforce the border and immigration laws. But I do think this should have been talked out a lot more than it was before the decree came down that the trucks are coming through.
The first time one of these trucks is in an accident, I predict there will be a populist backlash.
