Mexican Trucks Rolling Up Our Highways Today

Drudge, often a shrewder judge of what people really worry about than the MSM (who are busy telling people what they think they ought to be worried about), runs this item at the top of his page. The DoT reassures us:

Under the pilot program, Mexican long haul trucking companies that have met safety, licensing, and other U.S. requirements will be allowed to operate their rigs throughout the country. Proponents say this will reduce costs and speed up shipments.
There are a lot of questions that ought to be asked about these inspections, that haven't been asked by our useless public advocates in the media. Maybe there's something to be found in the Teamsters' unsuccessful court case discussed at the link.

Failing that, I'll refer you back to this item of mine from May, in which (own-horn-tooting) I report an original source that suggests law enforcement has some concerns about the level of inspection these trucks are going through:

California law enforcement officers will soon encounter Mexican trucks and commercial drivers throughout the state. Some of these trucks may not have been completely and thoroughly inspected at the USMexican border due to current in-place procedures. Law enforcement should be aware of this program and know what to expect when inspecting a Mexican truck and interviewing a Mexican commercial driver.
That's my main concern about this--how much inspection are these trucks subject to? But aside from that, I don't think this going to sit well with a large chunk of Americans.

Maybe there's nothing to worry about. Maybe it will be a boon to commerce and improve the efficiency of our trade and I should just shut up. I certainly feel more ambivalent about this than I do, say, a failure to enforce the border and immigration laws. But I do think this should have been talked out a lot more than it was before the decree came down that the trucks are coming through.

The first time one of these trucks is in an accident, I predict there will be a populist backlash.

Perhaps this has been discussed or is banned by Law. But wouldn’t it be simple to have U.S. drivers and tractors pick up safety certified trailers from Mexico at the border and vice versa for goods being shipped to Mexlco. This way everyone is happy and changing tractors for incoming trailers would not work a hardship for anyone and satisfy insurance, safety, and drivers skillrequirements as well as the Teamsters.

Elliot, what you describe was pretty much the status quo before this new system. Trailers were dropped off at the border, inspected, and an American driver picks it up and drives it away.

I’m sure Mexico is letting our guys drive on their side of the border - quid pro quo, right?

This is nothing new. I live on the Central Coast of California, and cannot travel far on the 101 highway or Interstate 5 without seeing trucks from Baja California with Mexican registrations. These trucks have Mexican insignia in spanish and Mexican plates.

Question of the Day: “In order to declare this pilot program a success, what will DoT consider an acceptable level of American casualties?”

Posted by MarkJ on September 2, 2007 7:28 AM

Jorge Bush is one step closer to his dream of erasing the border and starting the North American Union.

We are becomming a place where laws are not enforced, politicians are paid off, political correctness is out of control, in short, we are becomming more like Mexico. Ain’t that grand?

We’re a COUNTRY - not just an economic region where people from around the world come to work.

I want us to be a nation, not an employment service for inept, corrupt 3rd world nations like Mexico.

Decade after decade, Mexico can’t improve itself because of it’s statist economy and silly ethnic chauvenism (machismo) and now they have a US president who is obsessed with raising their standard of living, when his job is to work for the American people.

The Mexicans will win, by sheer weight of numbers, they will populate whole states before long, then petition to leave the US and join Mexico. There are enough wimpy, naive Americans who will allow it.

I wrote this last April:
But it seems even worse for the administration. The first incident that happens - an accident, smuggling, security problem, or some sort of conflict - will be laid at the administration’s feet. And rightfully so. And the administration has to know that an incident is unavoidable. That appears to be very bad politics. So I wonder what the ulterior motive is. Must be a political concession to Mexico, but what are we getting back?

Why must American taxpayers continue to fund repairs to our infrastructure so that Mexican truckers can do the work our American truckers are not allowed to do? Mexico has long looked at the U.S. with envy and avarice. We are the innovators, the dreamers, the doers and shakers. They can’t be us, they don’t have the moxie. All they have is the desire. So, with GW’s help, they’ve figured out how to become rich and successful like America. Suck it dry.

It seems as though the message our govt. is sending is this - if you are hispanic, come to the US and do whatever the hell you want to. You have carte blanche.

Fake or stolen ID’s, social security numbers, driver licenses, or drive without one, without insurance, without registration, get a job (we’ll all learn Spanish in order to better “accomodate” your needs), get paid under the table, don’t pay income tax, sign up your children for welfare (social programs), the spineless idiots in the public schools will teach your Mestizo children in Spanish and tell them how proud they should be to be Mexican!

Cinco de Mayo (more like Sink-Hole de Mayo) everyone!
