Time's Person of the Year . . . Putin? Really?

Are we talking about the same Vladimir Putin? The ex-KGB, saber-rattling, election-rigging, dissent-repressing, economy-centralizing, strong-arming, dirty tricks-approving, dynasty-creating Vladimir Putin that is rapidly becoming the antithesis of freedom and human rights in Russia? How could they possibly choose him?
The nod went to the Russian leader because of Putin's "extraordinary feat of leadership in taking a country that was in chaos and bringing it stability," said Richard Stengel, Time's managing editor. That's quite true, actually. Of course, he's brought back a lot of the Soviet Union-era evils to do it. I guess what Time is really saying is that the ends justify the means. That should shut them up on the topic of waterboarding.
This is ridiculous - I'm turning in my award from last year.
