Welcome, Ventura County Star Readers

I think someone at the Ventura County Star is drinking a lot of Maalox right now in response to my discovery that they were using (and still are using) the Block User software to expunge comments disagreeing with the editorial line. I base this on two pieces of evidence.

First is from JYB commenter Frank Davis, who blogs here, and who went straight to the top with the story (emphasis mine):

I just spoke with publisher George Cogswell, who summarized that it was a “low level employee” who initiated the block user toggle thinking it was his job to protect the editor. Cogswell said they had dealt with the employee and the problem “aggressively” and that the blocking would not continue except for profanity issues. I suggested they make an acknowledgment and a mea culpa. We’ll see.
I'll be watching for that.

The other thing that makes me think they're paying attention is below the jump:

Once again, the Junkyard delivers. I’d be inclined to give the editor the benefit of the doubt. It seems not-unheard of that a young idealist at the paper is on a mission.

Great site you guys have!

Would you like to have a Link Exchange with The Internet Radio Network?? At the IRN you can listen for free to over 50 of America’s top Talk Shows via Free Streaming Audio…

Thanks, Gordon! I’m curious to see what they have to say, and you’re probably right, but Howry’s own misleading apology makes me pretty skeptical of anything they tell me.

As of today, 14 December, some posters to the Star’s forums are still blocked, even though they can post comments to articles. The reason they are still blocked is that the electronic media folks had an outside entity block by IP address. This presents a particular problem if a server is blocked in that anybody on the network will be shown the red FORBIDDEN sign if they try to post.

I have faith that George Cogswell, the Star’s new publisher/president, will resolve the problem to the satisfaction of all —- except perhaps to those who do not want to see intelligent and well written opposition to liberal positions on law enforcement and issues of illegal immigration.
