Gitmo Lawyers Endorse Obama

Wow, now they're issuing endorsements?:

WASHINGTON --
More than 80 attorneys who have been offering free-of-charge legal services to Guantánamo detainees issued a statement Monday supporting Democrat Barack Obama's presidential bid.

''We are at a critical point in the presidential campaign, and as lawyers who have been deeply involved in the Guantánamo litigation to preserve the important right to habeas corpus, we are writing to urge you to support Senator Obama,'' the lawyers said in an open letter dated Monday.

Some familiar names in there, including a couple of the Center for Constitutional Rights, discussed below. P.S.:
Obama has gone further than many. In a November, he pledged to both close the prison camps and ''restore habeas corpus,'' a position that Democratic rival John Edwards has also staked out.

Hillary Clinton, likewise, has said from the U.S. Senate that she favors closure. But she has not prominently included pledges to do it in her campaign speeches.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney, in contrast, has advocated doubling the detention center -- which today holds about 275 foreign men as enemy combatants and cell space for more than 1,500.

______________
On a possibly unrelated note, I've had at least five visits from someone using a computer at the Inter-American Development Bank to my CCR/IIIT post below, following the LGF link. Somebody over there is very interested in that post.

UPDATE: The list. Hey, thanks, guys!

So the lawyers and John Edwards want to “preserve” and “restore” habeas corpus rights to terrorists? Gee, please correct me if I’m wrong, but terrorists have NEVER enjoyed this particular right under our Constitution. How can one “preserve” or “restore” something that has never existed in the first place?

Oh, that’s right, I forgot: lawyers live in a different dimension than the the rest of us slobs, one where they can ignore history, current facts, and legal precedent and simply conjure up something out of nothing.

Habaeas Corups is very important; what happens if it were you locked up without any recourse? It’s all fine and dandy till it happens to you. Now, these individuals are probably there for very good reason but they should not be denied due process to law; after all America is supposed to be the democracy, the bringer of justice to the world, and we cannot even allow people that justice? We allow baby rapists and child abusers and murdereds due jsut ice, so why not these individuals as well? I’ll be very afraid the day that there is no recourse for being accused of crimes, regardless of committing them or not

  1. They’re not citizens of the USA.
  2. They were captured on a battle field during combat.
