Hey Conservatives: Be Nice to McCain, and Maybe He'll Be Nice To You! And Other Lies
A while back I wrote about our job as primary GOP voters:
Our job as GOP voters is to pick the guy who's telling the truth to us conservatives in the primary and will lie about being moderate in the general, as opposed to the guys who are lying to us about being conservative and then tell the truth about being moderate in the general.Of course, some candidates aren't even bothering to lie to us about being conservative or having any use for conservatives at all.
According to a poster at the Corner (can't find it now to link), that's because we just haven't given McCain enough love.
Has it ever occurred to "conservatives" that they might sit out and McCain might still win? What happens then? If there is a surer path to irrelevancy I can't think of one. I will tell you what, if Hillary slimes her way past Obama and it is McCain versus Clinton, I am not sure McCain will need the conservatives. Something for the right wing punditocracy to chew on as they declare jihad against McCain. That's why my reaction to this is much like Ace's:
In what fantasy world does this guy lives in in which conservatives have any influence over McCain at all? He doesn't treat us as constituents, allies, or friends. He treats us as whipping boys to be denigrated and thwarted for the purposes of goosing his appeal to moderates and liberals and of course his friends on the New York Times editorial board. If he wanted to make nice, he's had plenty of opportunities. Showing up at CPAC--now that you think you need us--does not make you a conservative, Senator.
There seems to be some disagreement about whether McCain really made that remark about Alito "wearing his conservatism on his sleeve" as John Fund reported. Well, John Fund has never lied to me.
