Product Review: Philips SBC HS900 Headphones

Hey, these sound great. I bought 'em about a month ago and they fold up nicely and were even pretty comfortable.

Then two weeks later the sliding head yoke snapped on the left side as I pulled them off my ginormous Sputnik of a head. I could still use them as long as I didn't extend the left side at all, which meant that they fit weird and gave me a headache. Then yesterday they snapped all the way, leaving me just to balance the left cup on my ear while the jagged edge stabs into my temple.

I tried duct-taping them just now and thought it looked ridiculous but oughta hold. And then as I was updating the last entry, listening to a little Dick Dale, SNAP it bursts its surly bond and the jagged edge goes deep into my cerebral cortex as I sit here tilting my head to balance it on my ear. (Don't worry, it's my left brain, and I wasn't using that part enough anyway, and it may free up some creative thinking.) So:

POSITIVE: Good sound quality, comfortable
NEGATIVE: Brain-stabbage

VERDICT: these are fragile crap; do not buy them. I don't want to throw them out now since I paid like $25 for them, but I'm not enjoying sharp plastic in my head and I can't figure out how to fix them. If you do get nice over-the-ear headphones, get some with a springy metal bar connecting the headphone parts and not all-plastic.

You can get Sennheiser wireless (headset and broadcast unit) on eBay, refurbished (but like new), at great prices. I’ve bought 3 sets of the 110 wireless version at an average price of $17.50 + $14 SH (<$32 total), and have loved them. They’re very sturdy, have terrific sound quality, and the earpiece coverings make them more comfortable to wear for long periods than any other headset I’ve tried.

Hm…I am intrigued. Wireless is nice, as is non-stabbiness. Does the wireless thing interfere with a wireless internet router or similar machinery?

No, or at least I have had no interference from a wireless router in the same room and a wireless card plugged into my laptop. The model (110) I got, and I think all of the Sennheiser models, has 3 channels on the broadcast unit and 3 matching channels on the headset, so even were there some interference, one might well be able to eliminate it by changing channels (I assume - since I’ve not had an interference problem on which to test the channel switching approach). Wireless headset uses 2 AAA batteries, which in my experience have lasted for something like 20-30 hours of listening before being replaced or recharged.
